Abstract: To study the effects of bamboo char on soil fertility improvement and on nutrient uptake, yield, and quality in Brassica chinensis,a field trial was conducted with four treatments: 1)control(no fertilizer);2) compound fertilizer(N∶P2O5∶K2O = 15∶15∶15)2 000 kghm-2;3)bamboo char,2 250 kghm-2;and 4)a combination of bamboo char(2 250 kghm-2) and the compound fertilizer (2 000 kghm-2). The treatments were arranged in a randomized block design with three replications. Plant shoots and soil samples in each plot were collected at harvest. Soil pH and soil organic carbon content in the bamboo char treatment were significantly(P<0.05) higher than those in the compound fertilizer treatment. There were no significant differences between the concentrations of soil available N,P,and K among the treatments. Plant shoot yield and vitamin C concentration were significantly (P<0.05) higher than the compound fertilizer treatment. [Ch, 1 fig. 4 tab. 20 ref.]
