A review of research on sterol carrier protein-2

    Corresponding author: ZHENG Bing-song

Abstract: Sterol carrier protein-2 (SCP-2,also known as the non-specific lipid transfer protein) is an intracellular, small, basic protein domain that in vitro enhances the transfer of lipids and sterol between membranes. It is widely existed in bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes. The roles of SCP-2 remain unclear owing to its complicated structure and function although there are suggestions that SCP-2 involves in catalyzing metabolism of plentiful matters. The purpose of this review is to summarize our current knowledge about evolution, structure and function of the eukaryotic SCP-2 gene family and discuss potential functions of SCP-2 in vivo or vitro as studied in large numbers of experiments in recent years. Furthermore, the SCP-2 gene and the application of SCP-2 are discussed. [Ch,1 tab. 33 ref.]
